How to Makeup: Brow Stuff

You’re probably sitting there thinking “Why do I need to put makeup on my eyebrows? That’s crazy!” If this is you, then just sit tight until the next section, because this doesn’t apply to you. Or does it? Brows create a frame for the eyes and act as a focal point, so defining them can make any look seem more finished. What is it?

A pencil, powder, gel or marker product used to enhance your brows or fake their existence.

Why might I want to use this stuff?

Some ladies are able to rock naturally full, luscious brows. Some of us… well, it takes a little more work. Maybe your eyebrow hair grows in a bit sparse, or maybe you learned to tweeze your eyebrows in the 90’s when super-thin brows were ‘in’. Or both. Brow products can help you with anything from softly filling in sparse areas all the way down to drawing in brows that don’t exist at all.

How do I choose the right one for me?

Formula

There are a few different types available, and the type you pick depends a lot on what your goals are.

• Pencil – brow pencils, like eyeliner, are available in wooden or retractable versions. Pencils are great for making very defined lines and for doing short, hair-like strokes in bald patches. The thicker consistency can also have better lasting power.
• Powder – brow powders are usually applied with a stiff angled brush. They’re great for softly filling in sparse areas, but can also be used for drawing in brows. Matte eyeshadows can be a great substitute for a dedicated brow powder.
• Marker – similar to felt-tip eyeliners, brow markers come in a pen form and dispense a liquid product that leaves a stain behind. These are best suited for filling in existing brows.
• Gel – brow gels come in a mascara-like tube with a spoolie brush and are used to keep your brow hairs in place. Tinted versions are available that can also help darken/fill your brows.

Color

Choosing the right color is (in my humble opinion) the most important part of picking a brow color. The wrong tone or darkness will create an obvious contrast between your brow color and hair color. Just like skin, pay attention to the undertone of your hair – if you have ash-based hair, a reddish brow product will clash, and vice versa.

My favorites

I’m absolutely in love with Anastasia Beverly Hills products because I haven’t found any other brands yet with as wide a range of color options, especially for darker ash-toned hair. In particular, I use either the Brow Wiz or Brow Powder Duo almost every single day; I use the color Ebony.
