New Stuff: Michael Kors Beauty

I was lurking around the Macy’s website earlier when I noticed something new in their brand list for makeup – Michael Kors. Rumors about a MK cosmetic line have been floating around for a while now, but I didn’t realize it had actually been released. I guess maybe it got lost in all the fanfare over the Marc Jacobs Beauty launch? I haven’t gotten a chance to see if it’s available at my local store (the line is a Macy’s exclusive, at least for now), but my gut reaction is that I’m sort of underwhelmed. For starters, the range of products is pretty limited:

  • Nail Lacquer
  • Lip Lacquer (lipstick)
  • Lip Luster (lip gloss)
  • Bronzer
  • Bronze Powder Brush

And…. that’s it. Maybe they were trying to focus on doing a few products really well (time will tell, I haven’t gotten to try these yet), but if I’m out shopping, a cosmetic counter with only five products on display is barely going to be a blip on my radar. That is, if it even registers at all. The color selections are equally lackluster; you could categorize all of them into nude, red, fuchsia/berry and vampy. I’ve already filled most of those needs in my existing makeup collection, so nothing’s really giving me that “I need dis!” reaction.

The packaging ties in well with the overall Michael Kors branding, which is to say, blingy and gold with very in your face name branding. It’s one of those things where the materials and attention to detail could make or break the packaging – if the packaging is metal or heavy plastic and well-manufactured, it could be very luxurious. If not, I expect it will come off as chintzy – it already bears a little too much resemblance to the Milani Cosmetics packaging as it is.

On the other hand… maybe when I check these out in person I’ll be blown away by the quality. I’m planning on making a trip to the mall on Friday anyway, so if I get a chance to play around with the new products I’ll be sure to post an update. Have you guys gotten to see this stuff in real life? What did you think about it? Leave a comment below!

I was hoping my Macy’s would have the collection in, but no luck yet. The girl I asked acted like she’d never heard of it. Hopefully I’ll get to test it out before too long.
