Meh: Things that I’m skipping (for now)

I realize that a lot of things I review are things that I absolutely love, and am really excited about – but I know that can get old. The fact is I try to test things before buying if I can, and I tend to lean heavily on brands that consistently have stuff I love. So most of the time products don’t even make it into my front door until I’m pretty sure I’ll be happy with them. I’m currently going through the process of weeding out things I feel a little bit lukewarm about, and I’ll be sure to review them because it’s important to know the not-so-good stuff too. In the meantime, here are some things that I thought about buying, but ultimately decided against.

Burberry English Rose Collection

Burberry English Rose Collection – I was thrilled to hear about new Burberry eyeshadow quads for spring, but neither of the color palettes (pink and sage) suit my skintone or my preferences. I had hoped for a new blush too, but they’re repromoting Cameo (and I’m pouting because I already have that one).

Guerlain Meteorites

Guerlain Meteorites – I’ve been waffling on getting some Meteorites Pearls for… probably over a year now. When they reformulated them and changed to the gorgeous new packaging for spring, I really thought these would be the ones. I played around with them at the counter though, and they just had a bit too much shimmer for my taste. Oh well, I didn’t need another finishing powder anyway.

NARS Narsissist Eye Palette

NARS Narsissist Palettes – My interest was caught by the sneak peeks that were floating around instagram, but after seeing the details I’m a little less enthused. Nearly $80 is a bit more than I want to pay for a neutral palette, especially considering I’ve had hit or miss experiences with NARS shadows in the past. I’m also mildly annoyed at their insistence on putting Orgasm and Laguna in all their cheek palettes. I don’t own either one because they don’t look good on me, and I know a lot of other folks already have both.

Urban Decay Naked 3

Urban Decay Naked 3 – I know there’s a ton of hype around the Naked palettes, but I’m really just not that into them. I actually did have N1 and N2, but ended up passing them along to new homes because I didn’t wear them as much as I thought. The finishes tend to be a little more frosty than I prefer, and some of the shades had more fallout than I wanted to deal with. Once you add the fact that the colors in Naked 3 aren’t really my thing, giving it a pass is a no-brainer.

Wayne Goss Holiday Brush

Wayne Goss Holiday Brush – Back when this was just a rumor I was really interested to see how it looked. It does seem like a handy brush to have, but black goat isn’t always soft enough for me (thanks, sensitive skin!). I have a fairly similar brush in my collection already, anyway. Normally the words “Limited Edition” would compel me to buy it regardless, but the brush head for the Hakuhodo B103BkSL looks suspiciously similar – plus the Hakuhodo is a few bucks cheaper even when you count the cost of shipping.

You are right to skip the WG brush, its quality is below average. It is not scratchy, but there is a strong stench of animal, it bleeds dye even after 5 washes, it is not evenly shaped, looks kinda crooked (and it’s not incidental, many other people have had the same issue, even with the WG #2 brush, the squirrel one, from his collection, which is lovely and is a good value for money, but still, it is crooked – and again, several people have had this issue, it’s not just me) and for some reason, after every (careful) wash the is some kind of glue spillage from inside the ferrule, that runs onto the hairs and dries on them (on the outside, mainly).
Had I known, I would have skipped it.

I’ve seen a couple other people say they’ve had issues with the holiday brush too :-( I saw at least one person on a forum that was able to return it though. I feel like the production was probably rushed to get it out before the holidays and quality control might have suffered.

I, also, returned it. It cost too much money to set the brush aside and just nag about it.

I was mainly let down because they did not disclose what type of hair the brush was made of, only stating it was “natural hair”, which led the average consumer to believe it would be at least a mixture of goat/squirrel, especially since it cost 50 pounds.
It definitely did not agree in terms of quality with the rest of his brushes, which are lovely and very well made, I have to say.

I talked myself out getting Narssisist eye palette within an hour (when I saw the Kiko baked quads). Shame though, I was looking for a reason to buy the Creamy Concealer and get free shipping hah.

I’m skipping Naked too. I don’t own the other ones so I don’t feel anything about not bothering!

I’m skipping most of the collections: NARS, almost all of the Chanel Spring – just the purple I D’O for me, Dior, Guerlain. I’m not sure if I want Givenchy stuff but the lipstick is intriguing me since it’s a gimmick but I do want the cream shadows that launch in Feb! I’m skipping Tom Ford too, I don’t care for sheer lipsticks at all.

I’ve heard lots of good things about Kiko! I really need to get some at some point. I had forgotten about the Givenchy cream shadows – some of the colors look like they’ll be pretty nice.

Haa..that’s my skip list right there! :D

Too bad about the Wayne brush..I wanted to buy at least one (not this holiday brush), but after a lot of looking around and thinking and hemmmming-hawwwwwing..I didn’t think they were worth it :(

Which brush do you have that is similar to the Holiday brush? I liked the shape, though the tip does seem a bit too pointy…

I’ve got the Chikuhodo Passion Powder brush (here: http://www.now-eproject.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&manufacturers_id=12&products_id=93), which isn’t quite as pointed, and I think it’s probably a little fuller. It’s black goat too, so not as soft as white goat or goat/squirrel mix, but it’s not scratchy. But the construction is perfect, and I love the hot pink handle :-)

Out of the Goss brushes I have, I think the 04 is my favorite – soooo soft. But Hakuhodo makes close dupes of pretty much all the Goss brushes.

I really wanted to get one of the Guerlain Meteorites, but it really is too shimmery for me and I preferred the old packaging. They still look so beautiful though.

I also wanted the NARS eyeshadow palette because I wanted to try their eye shadows after falling in love with their blushes, but I already have too many neutral shadows.

One day I’ll buy Guerlain’s Meteorites… one day… But that price tag… oh man.

Aaahhh that resolution I made too…and threw out the window with all the post-holiday sale, Japanese Spring releases, and other hodge podge! I’m still staring at the Burberry quad…it’s so so pretty! But how will it really look on me? Hmm….,

I passed on most of these as well!! I have the same feeling about naked palettes and passed on naked 1 & 2 last year to new homes. I used to love nars shadows when i was first getting into makeup, but not so much anymore. And i was bummed the burberry collection wasn’t more interesting to me. and i’m ignoring the existence of goss brushes for now lol. Oh and meteorites, i bought one from gummy’s blog sale hehe but have yet to try it. (the older one) good to know the newer ones seem to be more shimmery, as i know that won’t be my thing!
