My current go-to products

There are some mornings – ok, a lot of mornings – when I’m in a rush or too tired to think about what makeup I’m putting on. Luckily my autopilot function seems to be in fantastic working order, and my hands just automatically grab for certain products. Here are the things I’ve been using lately when I’m out of bed but my brain still isn’t quite awake.

Go-to products: July 2014Primer:  Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. It smooths on easily and helps keep me matte without drying my skin.

Foundation: Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation (I wear Natural). It takes a little more effort to apply than more-liquidy liquid foundations, but I know I won’t have to worry about shine all day.

Undereye Color Corrector: Armani Master Corrector in Pink. Just a tiny bit cancels out the dark bags under my eyes, so I can conceal without piling on tons of product.

Undereye Concealer: Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer (I wear Light). It’s one of the few concealers that actually doesn’t crease under my eyes, and it has great coverage.

Blemish Concealer: Amazing Cosmetics Concealer (I wear Medium Beige). Luckily I haven’t had much need for this lately (knock on wood) but it has incredible coverage without moving around or making the concealed areas look flaky. It also comes in about a billion colors. By a billion, I really mean closer to twenty-some.

Eye Primer: NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base. I have yet to find a primer that controls oily lids better; it’s the gold standard I test all other primers against.

Eyeshadow Palette: YSL Couture Palette in #4 Saharienne. I seriously think you could take these shadows, put them on in any order/placement and it would turn out ok. This is good for a light nude-ish look, or more evening-y.

Eyeliner: Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Liner in Black Ebony. Once I discovered tightlining, I could never go back. This stuff with the LM activator fluid goes on really easily and doesn’t transfer to my waterline. You can also use it for wings ‘n’ stuff, but I don’t usually – that’s more of a special-occasion look for me.

Brow Pencil: NARS Brow Perfector (I wear Suriname). Not pictured because I’m actually out of it right now, but I’ll be picking up a new one ASAP.

Contour: Surratt Artistique Blush in Grisaille. It’s a perfect light taupe that makes a really natural contour for pale to light-medium skintones. I would love it if they’d come out with a darker shade too, though.

Highlight: Shiseido Luminizing Satin Face Color in High Beam White. It’s almost matte, so it’s nearly impossible to over-do. Perfect daytime highlighter.

Blush: Burberry Light Glow Natural Blush in 03 Rose. This is a shade that looks fairly natural on me, so it’s easy to swipe on quickly. It’s very pigmented, so no building up is necessary.

Finishing Powder: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused. It blurs skin texture (within reason, obviously), doesn’t add a color cast and just gives a really nice glow.

Conspicuously missing from this list are mascara and lip colors. I have reasons for that. I don’t really have a go-to mascara right now because I’m not totally in love with the ones I have open (Chanel Inimitable Intense and Diorshow). If I had to pick an all-time favorite so far, it would probably be YSL Babydoll. For lipstick – I honestly can’t pick just one. I can say I gravitate toward medium warm pinks though.

What do you use when you’re on autopilot?

I love that Burberry blush so much. It’s such a beautiful colour. I can see it working on a ton of skin tones.
